First Annual KICKS FOR THE OUTBACK Draws Exceptional Crowd
The excitement was palatable. Banners were waving and cheers rose from the young crowd as the players took the field on Friday night, September 27. The first annual KICKS FOR THE OUTBACK drew over 1200 people to enjoy an exhibition soccer match between the coaches of the New Canaan and Darien Soccer Associations in Dunning Stadium at New Canaan High School. Forty coaches treated spectators to great soccer skills over the course of an hour while guest announcer Matt Micros of the Bridgeport Bluefish reported the game minute by minute. The final score was 3 to 2 with a winning goal scored for Darien by the professional soccer player, Jhonny Arteaga.
Following the game, more than 250 young people, ages 6-14, participated in organized skills competitions including power shots, juggling and penalty shootouts. New Canaan NOGA coaches in partnership with Darien Soccer Association coaches supervised the competitions with the help of varsity players from both towns. Winners were awarded tee shirts and other soccer equipment.
Guest VIP and Stamford resident, Jhonny Arteaga also signed autographs on photos and assisted with the skills competitions. Now with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds after a year in New York with the Red Bulls, Jhonny often participates in charity events for youth to promote the sport of soccer.
Several lucky attendees won door prizes including Jets tickets, an Xbox and FIFA 14 game, an autographed Arteaga jersey and team picture, JetBlue plane tickets and hotel packages, and a Behind-the-Scene Tour of a US National Soccer Match.
The proceeds from KICKS will go to support afterschool and weekend programming for youth and the community sponsored at the Outback. In addition, other organizations had the opportunity to raise awareness and funds, including Haiti Lumiere de Demain, Dollars for Dylan, and the New Canaan Soccer Association.
“The Outback is very grateful to our partners, the New Canaan Soccer Association, the Darien Soccer Association and NOGA for their generosity in putting together this great public event for the benefit of the Outback. We also are indebted to dozens of volunteers from the soccer associations, the Outback and the National Charity League for handling tickets, check-in and crowd control and security.” reported chair and Board Member, Lisa D’Virgilio, “It was a wonderful opportunity to bring the two communities together for an action-filled evening of family fun and entertainment.”
